摘要:

Cloud computing and storage is the new paradigm of operation in information technology. While cloud computing infrastructures have benefits, their energy consumption is becoming a growing concern. Data centers, which are used to provide the infrastructure and resource pool for cloud computing and storage, consume a large amount of energy. Future energy consumption predictions of these data centers are even bigger concerns. To reduce this energy consumption of cloud computing, and information technology in general, energy‐efficient methods of operation have to be investigated and adopted. In addition, renewable energy usage in place of nonrenewable one can also reduce carbon emission, even if intermittency and volatility of renewable sources have to be taken into account. Migrating virtual machines and big data contents through the cloud exploiting the existing the network infrastructure can provide significant reductions in carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emission.

Achille Pattavina received the Dr. Eng. degree in Electronic Engineering from University of Rome (Italy) in 1977. He was with the same University until 1991, when he moved to “Politecnico di Milano”, Milano (Italy), where he is Full Professor since 1995. He has been author/coauthor of more than 300 papers in the area of communications systems and networks published in leading international journals/conferences and of two books: Switching Theory, Architectures and Performance in Broadband ATM Networks (New York: Wiley, 1998), Communication Network: Networking and Internets (McGraw-Hill, 2nd ed., 2007, in Italian). He has been coordinator of national and international research activities, including European Union funded projects. He has served in the Editorial Board of many IEEE/non-IEEE international journals. He has been Editor for Switching Architecture Performance of the IEEE Transactions on Communications from 1994 to 2011 and Editor-in-Chief of the Wiley European Transactions on Telecommunications from 2001 to 2010. He has been Technical Program Chair/CoChair of many international conferences. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE Communications Society. His current research interests are in the areas of green ICT and cloud computing, software defined networking, optical networks, switching theory, traffic modelling and broadband convergent access/metro networks.
